TEENAGE SPRINT STAR SWAIN TO RACE IN JAPAN
September 10: Rising Currumbin Viking SLSC beach sprint star Mitchell Swain leaves for Japan tomorrow with the Australian under 21 Surf Life Saving team - at 17 one of the youngest representatives to wear the green and gold in his chosen sport.
Swain, an under 15 Australian beach flags champion again showed his wares at the 2009 Where Is Australian Surf Life Saving Championships at Scarboro when he won the under 17 beach sprint and beach flags gold medals.
His dual gold medal effort caught the eye of the National Selectors and Australian Head Coach Brett Dowker and earned him selection in the Australian High Performance Squad.
Swain is equally proficient on the track as he is on the sand and has run 10.97 secs this season at the NSW Championships at Sydney Olympic Park.
The powerfully built Gold Coast youngster is in good hands under Currumbin Vikings Head Sprint coach Brett Robinson - himself a former two-time Australian champion and Australian representative.
Robinson has high hopes for his young charge who will gain enormous experience from competing internationally against the fastest sprinters from the USA, South Africa, Great Britain and Japan.
Swain had a visit recently from another Currumbin sprinting legend, two-time National champion Travis Quennell, who attended one of Robinson's training sessions.
"I have been following Mitchell's career for the past couple of years and it is great to see him rewarded with selection in the Australian team," said Quennell.
"My advice to him is to relax, enjoy every minute of it and make the most of every opportunity that comes along.
"He is in the best of hands under Brett Robinson and I can't wait to see him race at Kurrawa at this year's Aussies." TO WATCH MITCHELL, TRAVIS AND BRETT'S INTERVIEWS ON HMG TV CLICK THE BELOW LINKS
