Media Statement by Surf Life Saving

March 19: Australian Surf Life Saving Championships organisers have confirmed that a competitor went missing in the surf during competition.

Police and ambulance were on the scene along with the event's own safety officers and the carnival medical officers.

The tragic incident occurred at approximately 11.30am Queensland time during an U19 Ironman competition.

The competitor has been located after an extensive water and air search and has been transported to hospital via ambulance in a critical state.

At this time we are not able to provide further information on the incident, however, all Championship events have been suspended until further notice.

I will be making further statement as soon as I am able, however in the meantime, I ask all competitors, officials, media and members of the public to respect the feelings of the family and friends of the competitor at this time.
