AUSSIE IRB CHAMPS KICKS INTO FULL GEAR IN TASMANIA
The near perfect conditions provided a perfect backdrop for the opening day of racing, as competitors gave it all to secure their spot in tomorrow's all important finals.
With more than 500 competitors from around the country, competition was tough with plenty of close finishes, as the best IRB drivers and crews converged on Penguin.
Defending champions Kurrawa got off to a flying start - but hot on their heels were the crews from North Burleigh, Williamstown and Anglesea.
Surf Life Saving Australia Director of Surf Sports, Dave Thompson, said today's competition showcased the best Surf Life Saving has on offer.
"We have some of the best surf lifesavers in country here putting their skills to the ultimate test in a bid to claim an Aussie medal," said Mr Thompson.
"Competitors left nothing for chance today giving it their all to ensure their spot in tomorrow's finals.
"The Australian IRB Championships is an important part of the surf sports calendar as it provides members with the opportunity to refine their skills and keep fit during the off season.
"Penguin certainly turned on the conditions today - it has provided a great venue for the competitors but also our officials and spectators.
"This is the first time Penguin has hosted the Australian IRB Championships. SLSA is pleased to bring one of our national sporting events to our smaller Surf Life Saving states and we hope to grow surf sports competition in Tasmania.
"Tomorrow's finals are set to be red hot and the flat conditions will certainly make for close racing once again," he said.
Tomorrow's competition will resume at 8.00am, with presentations scheduled for approximately 3.30pm.
