KENDRICK NAILS IRONMAN BIG GUNS IN SURF RESCUE UPSET

kendrick louis 1st ironman 2011 interstate championships photo harvpix.com.jpgJanuary 31: Sydney builder Kendrick Louis has nailed two of the sport's biggest names in the first  2011 DHL International Surf Rescue Challenge at a windswept Mount Manganui in New Zealand's north today.

Representing the Australian under 21 team, the former Australian under 17 and two-time under 19 Ironman champion, upset big name "big brothers" Hugh Dougherty and Shannon Eckstein.

Louis won the Ironman from Dougherty and Eckstein and also the board from Dougherty, with Nick Malcolm (New Zealand Development) third and emerging South Coast, NSW Ironman Ali Day fifth.

Collaroy's outstanding youngster is no slouch when it comes to Ironman racing, having won three Australian titles; the under 17 National crown in 2007 and the under 19 gold medals in 2008 and 2009.

Ironman king Eckstein won the single ski, while his Northcliffe team mate Dev Lahey took the surf race for Australia.

And while Louis led the upsets in the water it was Kurrawa's Ben Mispelhorn (Australian under 19 champion), also representing Australia's under 21s, who repeated the dose for the emerging Australians on the sand.

Mispelhorn won the beach sprint, defeating reigning Australian champion, WA's Tom Nolan (North Cottesloe) and the beach flags from Kurrawa team mate Paul Cracroft-Wilson (New Zealand).

In the women's events, Australia's Liz Pluimers won the Ironwoman-board race double, team mate Naomi Flood, fresh from shannon eckstein international ironman champion photo slsa.jpgher K1 1000 win in the Sydney Kayak Grand Prix II Meet, was too strong for Kristyl Smith and Teneale Hatton in the single ski while Smith won the surf race and National champion Laura Shorter the beach sprint.

Pluimers took top honours in an all-Australian finish in the Ironwoman from sisters Courtney and Bonnie Hancock.

In the end it was Australia with 21 victories from 26 events in the open competition, who reigned supreme on 112 points from New Zealand (94) and Japan (54).

Teams from Australia, New Zealand, Australia Under 21, New Zealand Development, Great Britain, Japan and Canada are competing in the three-Test Series, which resumes at Mount Manganui on Wednesday and concludes on Friday. - IAN HANSON
