SURF SPORTS, September 5: Coolangatta Beach holds a special significance in the history of Surf Life Saving as the venue of the first ever Australian Ironman Championship, won by the legendary Hayden Kenny back in 1966. It also holds the name of Surf Lifesaving's iconic endurance Ironman race - The Coolangatta Gold - originally christened the Coolangatta Gold Tri-Aquathon back in 1984 The countdown is now well and truly on for the 2011 Coolangatta Gold with entries flooding in from all over Australia for the 11th staging of the iconic surf sports endurance race that captures the imagination of the Australian sporting public on September 25. And it is fitting that five of Australia's elite Ironmen and Ironwomen congregate at Coolangatta Beach, the major transition point for the big race, TOMORROW Tuesday, September 6.
